Conscious breathing is to the mind what exercise is to the body.

There are many differences that distinguish this bodywork and we want you to know more about them to understand why it is a quality work.

Today, we want to share a very interesting and important topic: breathing. This article is aimed more at new stakeholders, as our trainees in training become aware. But it never hurts to remind them of this element to keep in mind.

We could write many sub-sections on breathing, as it is a very extensive subject and many self-exploration therapies work with it. More and more people are becoming aware of this, and there are specific therapies in the work of breathing. But let’s focus on what we are interested in, which is the Californian massage.

One fact to keep in mind is that we breathe at only 10% of our lung capacity. Because throughout our lives we accumulate all kinds of experiences: traumatic or emotional. Not breathing in front of these situations causes the human being to retain these experiences in the body for years. This creates a decrease in our lung capacity. In addition to creating postural changes and muscular tensions.

Many muscles are involved in breathing, the largest and most important of which is the diaphragm. It separates the thorax from the abdomen and allows, through breathing, the oxygenation of our body. On inspiration it contracts and descends, allowing the lungs to fill with air, and consequently the abdomen distends outwards. On exhalation, the belly pulls inward and the relaxation of the diaphragm, which rises, causes pulmonary contraction and expulsion of the air to the outside. But there are other, not so large muscles that are also involved in breathing.

During the massage session, the intention is to make the client aware of his breathing, since in life we do not find these moments to breathe. It is the way to be active and present with what is happening in your body, but at the same time disconnecting your mind. The client does not breathe alone, but together with the therapist, who guides him/her in which moments he/she has to breathe more deeply. The therapist joins in this deep breathing by being an accompaniment, the way of saying “I am also present, you can let go .”

There come moments when the two breathe synchronously, this causes a much deeper release of energy. Releasing patterns, giving space to the body and de-tensing the musculature, creating more body awareness and not forgetting the best thing: to relax completely.

The set of elements-techniques used in massage, without the conscious breathing of the client with that of the therapist, would not reach such a deep and beneficial work.
